Upcoming Appointment Television

  • The newest (to the U.S.) Doctor Who special will premiere tomorrow night at 6 PM, 9 PM Eastern, on BBC America. It's titled The Next Doctor, which is intentionally misleading since the Tenth Doctor still has some time left before he regenerates. It's actually a Christmas special featuring the best gift of all: Cybermen. A second special, Planet of the Dead, will air on July 26th.

  • The Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood is coming back to television as well. The mini-series Children of Earth will premiere on July 20th on BBC America. The mini-series is five episodes long with each episode airing on successive nights that week. I'm kinda bummed that neither Doctor Who or Torchwood are getting full series this year but any new programming is better than nothing.

  • The second season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 begins this Monday June 29th at 8 PM, 11 PM Eastern, on the Sci-Fi Channel. I've enjoyed the heck out of Gundam 00 thus far and I can't wait to see how they follow up the first season's finale.

  • After a long absence Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit is back on the air Saturday nights on [adult swim]. More importantly new episodes begin airing on August 22nd. That's nearly a year after the series first premiered. I'm glad they finally got their issues sorted out and we can finally see past the tenth episode.

When Shells Collide

Check out this promo 4Kids put out involving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' 25th Anniversary this year. Pay very close attention when they start talking about the World Premiere of a new special. See if you can recognize the Ninja Turtles as they appeared in the original animated series from the 80s and 90s. You can also see Bebop, Rocksteady and the Foot Soldiers marching out from the Technodrome.

It seems this new feature will have the Turtles from the modern series meeting up with their classic counterparts. You can see more at the Behind the Shells Blog, where there are some scrambled images and hidden mp3s to be found. More details will be revealed at Comic-Con. Nothing gets my geek-ness more excited than a good fictional multiverse crossover.

Shippūden Coming Soon

Viz is releasing the first DVD volume of Naruto Shippūden later this year on September 29th. They seem to be releasing the series as individual DVD volumes, as opposed to the three disc boxsets they used for the uncut version of the first series. This might be because they will no longer be releasing an edited version so they don't think a separate boxset release is necessary anymore. It's also just as likely they're doing this just because they know the fans are willing to pay for it. There's still no word if Naruto Shippūden will be airing on U.S. television.

The Last Airbender Trailer

It's hard to make any judgements based on just this trailer. They don't really show much of anything besides Aang training and the Fire Nation fleet. I am concerned about some of the movie's casting choices. I'll be very interested when we get to see the actors playing Katara and Sokka in character.

Return Of The Spectacular

New episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man premiere today on Disney XD, the network formerly known as Toon Disney. It's been a long time since the initial broadcast of the first season ended on Kids WB, a programming block which no longer exists. Since then the show has just aired repeats even on its new home of Disney XD. I'm not even sure how long it's been. Season two has started airing in a number of other countries but I've been waiting for the U.S. television debut of these new episodes.

Disney XD will air two new episodes today at 4PM, 7PM Eastern. These episodes feature the introduction of The Spectacular Spider-Man's versions of the classic villains Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter. I can't recommend this series enough.

The Exclusives Are Nigh

Watchmen comes to DVD and Blu-Ray on the 21st of next month, and a number of retailers have exclusive versions.

Best Buy will have two exclusives. This Doctor Manhattan case will have, appropriately enough, the Blu-Ray edition.

Best Buy will also have this Rorschach case containing the DVD edition.

Amazon.com has this replica of Nite Owl's Archibald ship.

Canadian retailer will have the Blu-Ray in a steelbook case. Oh Canada, why must you taunt me so?

Action Figure Newsbite 03

I don't know what the story is with these monsters since they're from Star Trek and I've yet to see the movie, but they look cool. They take me back to the bygone days of the early nineties when weird looking creatures were half of everything.

I've discussed Star Trek action figures before and while they have their issues I think the biggest mark against them is that they aren't visually interesting. I understand Playmates wanted to start with the main characters in their most iconic outfits but I think they should have spread them out more to have more variety in the line. Creatures and such are way cooler than dudes in colorful sweatshirts.

Check out the rest of the future assortments here. There are other aliens of less monstrous proportions and guys in space suits. Even Spock in his academy outfit looks better than the regular Spock figure.

Action Figure Newsbite 02

DC Direct's exclusive for this year's San Diego Comic Con is a doozy.

They'll be selling a series of Hal Jordan figures at Graphitti Design's booth with each Hal being a member of a different Lantern Corps. The kicker? A different Hal goes on sale each day of the con. The classic Green Lantern Hal will go on sale Wednesday, preview night, and will continue to be sold at the con until it sells out. The edition size of the Green Lantern is double that of the other figures so it shouldn't be too hard to get. It's going to be really challenging to obtain a complete set.

I can understand why this situation might be frustrating to some collectors, but speaking as someone who's never been a completionist though, I think this is a very clever idea.

BTW if you're scratching your head in confusion over the existence of a rainbow of Hal Jordans, I suggest you look into something called Blackest Night. It's coming soon and it's promising to be awesome.

Action Figure Newsbite 01

I'm looking forward to H2 the sequel to Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. Judging by the trailer it seems like it's sort of a remake of the original Halloween 2, which took place in a hospital. Granted the H2 trailer takes a truly horrifying turn when Sheri Moon Zombie shows up as a ghost. And I don't mean the good kind of horrifying.

I'm even more excited by the fact that Mezco has the license to produce action figures based on the movie. Micheal Myers joins his horror license brethren Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface from their move from McFarlane Toys to NECA to Mezco. Mezco may be the third destination but I think I like their products best.

Mezco already has their Micheal Myers figure figure up for preorder on their website.

A second Myers figure has been revealed but I don't know the story on it. I like this one better. This is the first distinct new look the character has ever had. He's been a plain jumpsuit kind of guy for far too long.

Gundam Rising

Looks like construction is now complete, or at least very close to it.

We are so close to something truly awesome here. Now if we can get this thing aboard Side 7 and sent some Zaku II mobile suits on a mission there, than things might finally start getting really interesting.

Lelouch's Last Stand

Lelouch vi Britannia's long strange trip is finally coming to a close.

Tonight at 1:30 AM, 10:30 PM Pacific, the final episode of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion will air on Adult Swim. The story of Code Geass's U.S. television broadcast has been almost as complex as the series' actual storyline. Premiering in April of last year this 100 episode series should have wrapped up almost two months ago, having aired one episode a week. Yet Code Geass would face schedule changes, re-starts, and more than one hiatus to allow the dubbing studio to finish their work. In fact Code Geass wouldn't have ended until the end of this month had Adult Swim not decided to air two episodes a a week during this final stretch. The show will even be concluding at the best time slot that it's had during it's run.

So it all comes down to this. Lelouch has had more risky gambits up his sleeve than most Death Note users, but what does he plan to do against Nunnally? Personally I'd like to see him tell the truth. He hasn't ever tried that yet. Unfortunately for him, he's likely past the point where anyone would believe him. I've avoided spoilers until now, and I can't wait to see how it all ends.

(A Fistful of Suck considers itself a family friendly blog, at least until you click on the pictures.) (^_~)

Update 10:32 PM: It seems there's been a schedule change. The original plan was to air the finale followed by a repeat of the first episode. Instead the second to the last episode that aired last week is being re-aired and the final episode will follow right after. Looks like it's still going to be another half hour before the waiting ends.

Update 11:30 PM: Well it's finally over.

****SPOILERS****

Dang. Well Lelouch was victorious. Technically. Still that was a real bring down. I would have been totally cool if he had just ruled the world with an iron fist. Instead he chose the high road and decided to unite the world by out-thinking every person living on it. All it took was the ultimate sacrifice pawn.

I thought Nunnally was really great during this episode. First when she argued with Lelouch pointing out all the errors in his thinking. He may have done all of this for her sake but she certainly seems like she would have been much better off had he just left their situation alone. Then at the end when she really realizes what has happened her situation becomes all the more tragic.

I have a couple of quibbles. First it was a cop out to have Cornelia live, but that's more of an issue with the previous episode. Second I really wish the unlikeably smug Gio had been killed off. This is why I prefer my epic mecha anime when they're directed by "Kill 'Em All" Tomino.

New Teaser Images From Licensing Expo

Some of these movies are still a ways off so these posters may become unrepresentative of the final product. I'm particularly curious as to whether the fourth Spider-Man movie will in fact be called Spider-Man 4. When was the last time a movie came out that proudly labeled itself to be the fourth entry in the series? Lethal Weapon 4?

First Look At New Shippūden Figures

Big Bad Toy Store has provided images of Toynami's forthcoming Naruto Shippūden action figures. I first learned of the line's existence from packaging mock-ups present at this year's Toy Fair. The first two in the line are Naruto himself, and Diedara. Diedara looks okay but Naruto seems off to me. I've liked what Toynami has done in the past with their Inu-Yasha and Bleach figures and I hope they can keep their Naruto line going for a long time.

Burst Through The Heavens With Your Soul

I got the last boxset I needed to complete Gurren Lagann. It comes with the fifth and sixth DVDs of the series.

The third LE set includes the first volume of the manga...

and the Gurren Lagnn Best Sound CD soundtrack. This is a two disc set with the first disc featuring the opening theme and closing themes. The second disc has the background music score. I've only listened to the first disc so far. It's pretty short but a little Shokotan goes a long way.

The packaging for each set in the series bears the emblem of Team Gurren.

Here's some images of the third and fourth DVDs, since apparently I didn't share any last time, and a group shot of all six.

Now it's time to combine!

One last bit of haul to close things off.
